Hi VulcanCon Fans!
VulcanCon is the hash tag name I’m using on Twitter. It is really the convention by Vulcan Events. It’s right here in Tampa so it’s certainly the shortest I’ve traveled to a convention. So after dinner I headed to the convention. I was interested in what an “Evening with Sally Kellerman” would entail. Not only has she been on Star Trek TOS, but she was also in a couple episodes of the Outer Limits and she played Hot Lips in the movie “MASH” for which she was nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award. And who can forget Sally in Star Trek TOS “Where No Man Has Gone Before“?
I walked into the Doubletree Hotel and noticed the DeLorean right away. It’s a replica of the one from the “Back to the Future” movies starring Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox. The fan girl in me couldn’t help but smile. I mean, come on… that movie made DeLoreans forever cool! Even my older daughter, Allie, wants a DeLorean for her first car.
After a few pictures of the DeLorean I moved on to the registration table. Check in was really easy. I got directions to the ballroom where Sally Kellerman would be doing her show.
I lined up outside the ballroom and didn’t have to wait long before being let inside. I was looking for a table near the front and two nice gentleman asked me to sit with them. Score! The ballroom was dimly lit and instead of rows of chairs had round tables scattered about. At each table were a couple votive candles. It reminded me of a jazz bar (not that I’ve been in one — I must have seen them on TV or movies).
The master of ceremonies for the whole weekend –Marc B. Lee – warmed up the crowd and then introduced Sally Kellerman. She was dressed all in black. She looks great, too. After a brief hello to the crowd, she started singing. I was impressed. She can sing! She sang several songs from her CD entitled “Sally”.
At one point she came out into the audience to sing. I thought she was brave to walk down the stairs of the stage in very high heels with a spotlight on her. She did well! Ms. Kellerman did an excellent job of making the crowd feel welcome. It was a fun, comfortable show. About halfway through she stopped singing and did a Q&A with the audience. She was asked about everything ranging from her work on “The Outer Limits” to working with Rodney Dangerfield in “Back to School”. For “The Outer Limits” she said she was a waitress at the time. She was told to expect a script in the mail. She didn’t think this would happen. However, six months later a script came in the mail with a note on it that said, “The part is Ingrid. The magic is yours.” She says it was a wonderful moment. One audience member asked what it was like to wear the big silver contacts. She answered that even though they cause other people a lot of problems she lucky because they never bothered her. I envy her — normal contacts bother me.
Ms. Kellerman then continued singing for us. She did a song and dance and I felt tired just watching her. She showed her humorous side by collapsing to the stage floor at the end of the number.
The audience gave her a standing ovation and begged her to sing one more song. Ms. Kellerman obliged and returned and sang Love Potion Number 9 for us. It was a great song to end on and seeing her show was a great way to kick off the convention. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring when I will be Jadzia Dax from Star Trek Deep Space Nine!
More to follow!
