Last night during the premiere of Stargate Universe “Air” parts 1 & 2 you, the fan, succeeded in not only enjoying the return of Stargate, you also pushed Stargate Universe into the Top Ten Twitter Trending Topics for Friday evening!
Great job fans! Great Job SGU!
First appearing in the Twitter Top Ten Trending Topics with a jump to eighth position approximately one hour into the North American premiere, Stargate Universe quickly moved to seventh, sixth and ultimately hovered in the fifth position for almost an hour!
As a Stargate Community News Site interested in the opinions of the fandom, we setup (here at WormholeRiders) a data tracking page to monitor Stargate Universe activity on Twitter. By tracking and sampling the hash tag “ #SGU “, comments from the Twitter feed were displayed in real time. Set to automatically refresh, we tracked a healthy portion of the #SGU tweets, something like a wee bit over 35,000.
Far too many for the human to read during the two hour premiere, we sampled randomly out of the undoubtedly many hundreds of thousands of tweets to get a flavor to the reaction to SGU. What was the verdict?
Well, we will leave the raw statistical analysis to the SGU “Math Boy” and other experts, but even casual review of the Twitter stream clearly indicates that our reviewers and most others in our field were correct; Stargate Universe is a hit generally believed to be extremely well received by the fans!
While there are always detractors or folks unhappy with an evolution such as Stargate Universe, the old adage stands true; “You can’t keep all the people happy all the time”. But even the negative comments were respectful in tone. Only a few rude foul language posts on Twitter or elsewhere were observed. And these few likely are malcontents, hardly worthy of mention. 
Give it a chance detractors, our new gate may just grow on you!
Perhaps what makes this premiere more exciting for many of the fans is that Twitter has provided a relatively safe platform for direct interaction between the cast, producers, creators, and the fandom. Now over 30 million strong, Twitter provides a type of social “glue”, an easy interaction between the constituents that was virtually unknown only a scant couple of years ago.
And interact they did! With Twitter’s global reach, fans from all over the world asked questions, received answers, and shared moments of sheer glee as the premiere unfolded! Each series of interactions were expressed in a genuine manner between the actors, and the creators present. Even series detractors should be pleased at the fashion in which the return of Stargate occurred. It was a breathtaking sight to behold!
What all who have seen Stargate Universe should know is this; SGU is an unqualified series premiere success! It can truthfully be said by anyone with an objective point of view both MGM and SyFy have kept “most the people happy most of the time” with the Stargate Universe pilot!
I for one look forward to following the development and growth of Stargate Universe over the coming years. As I shared in my previous review, it’s all here; the talent, the creativity, the new series with a new lease on life, and it’s all back on Fridays! What you the fans have done tonight with Universe is every bit as important as what the creators are giving us! Keep up the great work!
